ANY rod is perfect for the little brookies. Caught larger trout as a youngster in New England, but have never seen anything as ferocious as SNP's brookies. Fished the Rapidan for a few days a couple weeks ago (for the first time) and met only one other person in 3 days, but dozens of these miniature sharks on 3 different rods of various weights and lengths. God, I love that river and those beautiful little fighters!

I will be traveling to Roanoke, VA over the Memorial Day weekend and am interested in doing some fly-fishing near that area. This will be my first trip to Virginia and as I am completely unfamiliar with the area, I would appreciate any comments on good rivers to fish. I would also like to take a guided trip for one day, if possible and not too expensive. Any comments, information or particular websites to make my fishing trip more enjoyable would be greatly appreciated. I am an intermediate angler and have fished the GunPowder(MD), SanJuan(NM), Little Red(AR) and th White(AR). Thanks for any response . . . "Tight Lines to All".

Does anyone fish below the Clifton Forge Dam but me? It is fly fishing only spot where I caught TEN browns in less than four hours last week. Considering I don't know what I am doing thats terrific. All on Dry's all in difernent spots. Directions? Go to the resevoir. Hike well below the dam and work you way back up. You can hike well over a two miles down there for dozens of great pools. Try it! I am moving to LA next week. : ( so I am giving up this secret.

Fished the Jackson special reg. area on April 19. Light hatch of blue wing olives size 18. Trout seemed to be sipping in the emergers so we took them by trimming hackle on our flies. A few trout also fell for elk hair caddis size 12, but most seemed to pass them by in favor of blue wing olives. Also took a number of fish on both brown and olive wolly buggers. Great day. Beautiful area..

I'm anxiously looking forward to fly fishing Virginia trout waters. Former resident of Pennsylvania. Would appreciate corresponding with any fly fishermen in the Fredericksburg, VA area. Interested in trout fishing in SNP, but also would like to learn about "smallies" on the Rapidan & Rapahanock Rivers. Was an avid fly fisherman during the late 70's and early 80's. Fished many PA streams, but marriage (1982) and kids (ready-made family) changed my lifestyle. Have not been trout fishing since. Would truly appreciate hearing from any fly fisherman in the Fredericksburg and Northern VA area. Please contact me if you are in a similar situation, or are looking for a fishing partner. You may contact me by phone @ (home) 540-786-6168, (work) 301-670-5800, or (fax)301-670-5808. I live in Fredericksburg, but work in Rockville, MD. C'mon guys, let's here from you!! I know there's got to be at least one other fly fisherman in my area!! Let's make contact!! "Keep a taut line!" 'Cal'

Just caught My 5th, Citation Fish in the rain Last Friday. I'm now in line for the Master Angler Awd. Kinda wish that I had targeted an more agressive hard fighting fish than the Ring perch. The 45 pound blue Cat, The 5-9 Smallie and the 45 inch gar were not bad though. I really wanted number five to be caught on the fly rod. :( Bass in the Chick are feeding strongly now. I'll be out there soon with the fly rod Right after the ring perch, I caught a four pounder -lage mouth on 2lb test Friday. Mac

I've been flyfishing for about four years, the last 2+ for trout. I live in Fairfax, VA and work in Baltimore. So far this year I've fished Gunpowder River (MD), Morgan Run (MD), Big Hunting Creek (MD), Jackson River (VA), and Dry River (VA). Usually make it down to Mossy Creek a few times during spring and summer. I'm hoping to get to more of the SNP streams earlier this year than last. Also want to fish more of the Southern PA streams this year. I'd be interested in receiving any info on the above streams and others.

I am new to flyfishing. I live close to accotink creek in northern va. I went there last sunday, just down from the dam, but had no luck. I saw several people walking out with some nice size Rainbows though. I was the only one I saw with a fly rod. If anyone had a suggestion on the fly I should be using/trying I would greatly appreciate it. Also, my inlaws just moved to Front Royal and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a nearby trout stream to try, preferrably in SNP(Beginner level).

Trout are hitting dries already!!! A buddy and I Caught a big one each in a special stream in covington on friday. Even in the warm rain we could see a tiny trico hatch. The fish were so unruly, they smashed a large caddis fly & a Large Mr. Rappidan. Pheasant tails worked well. My largest was a stocky 18 inch Rainbow on a pheasant tail. I was sure it was larger until I netted it. :)

2-19-97 looks like it would have been a killer day on the stream. Had only a half day So I went to the Chickahominy River. Fishing was good for the experienced. I saw a big stringer of bass all over 2 pounds going to 4 pounds. They were caught on minnows on a bobber 4 ft down.. Ok that's food for thought. use a sinking line and a clauser but there are there......

Hey everyone take a look at the Jan Issue of Virginia Wildlife (the magazine put out by the fish and game dept), it is devoted almost entirely to VA trout! Also there was a recent article in the Roanoke times but I am unsure of the date. (hearsay) I wish everyon well and happy fishing. Anyone else read Robert W. Service? His poem can teach you more about the spiritaul aspects of fly fishing than any others even come close too and fly fishing is of course at least 50% spiritual. BYe!

My fly angling thus far has been confined to pond fishing and a little salt water when the opportunity arises. There's a nice article on the Shenandoah in the Dec. 96 National Geographic, and now I'm dying to dip a line in the water up that way. This is a great homepage! I usually float the upper potomac in my canoe casting for fiesty smallmouth bass. Did you know that the Algonquin name for smallmouth is "Achigan", which means ferocious! Recently started doing a little trout fishing on the Gunpowder in MD, but would really like to check out other spots within 3-4 hours. It sure looks like there are lots of great opportunities in VA, so I guess I'll have to visit Murray's and get started. I'm looking for places to fish this Sat - Wed, so I would sure appreciate any suggestions.

I've been fly fishing for five years now and "tying my own" for the same period. I'm also a member of the Southeastern Chapter of Trout Unlimited, for anyone that is in the area and looking for a Chapter. Good group of fishermen. Enjoy talking about fly fishing and fly tying when I cant't get time to do them.

Strictly a Trout fisherman, I fish more in PA and MD than in Virginia. In Va I like the headwater brookie streams, and occasionally like to hit the Jackson. I tie my own flies and teach both beginning and intermediate fly tying at my local shop. I am active in both FFF and TU, and encourage others to do the same.
