Fly Fishing Glossary


BASIC FLY FISHING EQUIPMENT

ROD
for casting out line, varies between 6 1/2 to 15 feet and is made of graphite, cane, or fiberglass

REEL
holds a certain amount of line depending on the line's weight ant taper

LINE
its weight carries the fly to its destination, there are various weights and tapers for different circumstances

LEADER
attaches fly line to tippet material, size depends on sensitivity and size of fish to be caught

WADERS
covers feet, legs, and sometimes chest, used to stay warm and dry in the water

VEST
stores fishing gadgets in accessible pockets

GLASSES
"polarized" to see under the water without glare

FLY BOXES
holds flies

MISC. GADGETS
wading nets, strike indicators, floatant, lead shots...
